If a child is unhappy at school for some reason many parents begin to wonder whether to change their school as they feel that a new school may give their child a new start. In some cases, this may be the best option but there are avenues that should be explored before this step is taken.
The first port of call should be the class teacher who should know the pupil well. A proper meeting between the class teacher and parents rather than a quick word at the school gate is more appropriate and will ensure privacy. A frank discussion should be had about the child’s progress and well being and whether there are any issues with friends that may be causing the child to be unhappy.
If a meeting with the class teacher is not productive then a meeting with the head teacher should be sought even though it would be beneficial for the class teacher to be present too.
If the issues that have caused the child to be unhappy cannot be resolved after a period of time then it may be that a school move is the right thing to do. It is important to be honest with the new school about the child’s feelings about school so that they can be aware of any issues that may arise.
