A parents’ evening is a challenge for even the most experienced of teachers, having to be honest with parents about their children’s behaviour and academic development. It can be challenging and testing to say the least. However, there are also many positives that can come out of a parents’ evening and if you want to make the most of the time you have with parents and pupils, this is very much the way to approach it.
Think about how you can put a positive spin on your conversations and help the pupils to get the most out of the feedback you are giving. Even if what you are saying is negative and there is a lot of improvement to be made, try to phrase this as tangible goals. With support and encouragement, there are plenty of chances to discuss self improvement at parents’ evenings, and to get parents and pupils on board.
